This section is for people wanting to teach the RYA Wingsurfing Scheme.

Assistant Instructor

Required certificates

RYA Wingsurfing Scheme Improve your Wingsurfing or above certificate

Health declaration form or medical questionnaire

Experience

Competent wingsurfer or wingfoiler

Pre-entry assessment

Candidates must have the recommendation of their centre's Principal

Training course

Courses are conducted by the Principal or Chief Instructor of the training centre. The course may be approximately 20 hours covering RYA teaching for beginners. Candidates will be assessed on their teaching ability with beginners.

The AI's training is limited to assisting qualified instructors and does not include first aid or powerboat handling.

Qualified to teach

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • assist instructors in teaching wingsurfing up to the standard of the Improve Your Wingsurfing Course.

  • Work under the supervision of an RYA senior instructor (SI)

AIs must never be allowed to work without direct supervision.

Validity

This is a centre-specific certificate, awarded by the training centre and valid for five years.

RYA Wingsurfing Scheme, Improve your Wingsurfing or above.
First aid certificate
RYA Powerboat Level 2
RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work
Health declaration form or medical questionnaire

Competent wingsurfer or wingfoiler

Two day course

Qualified to teach

Able to teach:

  • Learn to Wingsurf

  • Improve Your Wingsurfing

Validity

Five years from the date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained.

Minimum age

16

Required certificates

RYA Wingsurfing Instructor (or attendance on the four day course covering Wingsurfing and foiling)
Personal level to the competency of RYA Wingsurfing Sustained Flights Certificate

First aid certificate
RYA Powerboat Level 2
RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work
Health declaration form or medical questionnaire

Experience

Personal wing ability to RYA Wingsurfing Sustained Flights

Pre-entry assessment

RYA Wingsurfing Instructor or attendance on the four-day course, with personal foiling experience to the level of RYA Wingfoiling Sustained Flights

Training course

Two to four day course. You will be assessed continuously throughout the course.

Qualified to teach

RYA Wingfoiling First Flights or higher (Personal foiling level dependent)

Validity

Five years from the date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained.

Minimum age

18

RYA Wingfoiling Instructor
First aid certificate
RYA Powerboat Level 2
RYA Safety Boat certificate
RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work
Health declaration form or medical questionnaire

Experience

Competent level of personal Wingsurfing ability, good teaching and coaching skills, motivational and leadership skills, a positive and enthusiastic approach and good communication skills.

Appointment by

Nominated and appointed by RYA Training

Qualified to teach

Will be appointed as an RYA Wingsurfing Trainer.

Validity

Appointed annually. After five years a practical revalidation is required.
