A solid base for a new influx of young people to attend regular sessions during 2021

New programme at Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre Trust

London Docklands sailing centre introduces a new Disability Watersports Programme for 8-18 year-olds.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the ever changing restrictions and the subsequent lockdowns, DSWC still managed to successfully launch and run a Disability Watersports programme in 2020. Funded with a partial grant from the RYA Foundation, this formed a solid base for a new influx of young people to attend regular sessions during 2021.

The programme follows the same format as DSWC’s Youth Programme, tailored to accommodate a range of disabilities. Attendees can undertake a variety of watersports including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing and paddle-boarding.

The sessions for the young people provided regular access to emotional, physical, social well-being which they were deprived of during the pandemic. Many of the children were able to make friends and complete an activity which otherwise they wouldn't have been able to try.

It provided a platform for existing and new attendees to make use of the programme, with repeated attendance close to 100%. The programme is scheduled to continue from Spring next year.
