RYA Winter Club Champion crowned

Donnie Gillies

If you’re an eSailing fan, you’ll have seen that earlier this year it was a win for Scotland, as Donnie Gillies from Castle Semple Sailing Club sailed his way to the top of the leader board in the National Final of the RYA eSailing Winter Club Championship (24 February 2022).

Racing under the name of VIT-Maradonnie, Gillies battled against 18 fellow racers in a series of six races with one discard, in the virtual showdown.

He said: “It’s not often you come out on top in a fleet like that. Arthur (VIT-Farley) has been ranked #1 in the world for some time now, and not without good reason. Mike (DejaVu) was at the last 2 world finals, and there were a host of other top esailors, many of whom I competed alongside at the last Nations Cups.

“eSailing is a great way to spend the long winter months when the boat is in the garage, and through the summer you can fit six races easily around the rest of your life. You can organise your own club races, challenge your friends to a match and in the main events, you can lock horns with some of the best sailors in the world”.

Donnie Gillies is a GP14 sailor and GBR eSailing champion in 2019. He finished 4th at the 2020 eSailing world championships.

Racers ready! It’s the GBR eSailing National Championship

Once again, the RYA have partnered with World Sailing and Virtual Regatta for the GBR eSailing National Championship 2022.

The eSailing GBR National Championship sailing season launches on 01 April 2022 along with the second season of the eSailing World Championship.

The free-to-play online game provides players with an opportunity to race against friends, fellow sailors and real-world Olympic champions.

The season will end on 31 July 2022 with the top thirty ranking British eSailors qualifying for the semi-finals, with the Live Final on 08 September 2022 when GBR eSailing National Champion will be crowned.

The top 10 ranked players from the GBR Championship will also automatically qualify for the eSailing World Championship Finals Playoff.

RYA Show and Promotions Manager Celia Edgington said: “With eSailing continuing to grow in popularity we’re delighted to once again be partnering with World Sailing and Virtual Regatta to officially launch the start of the national championships. We hope to see even more players and nail biting finishes this season”.
