Inclusion & Equality

The RYA aims to ensure that all present and potential participants, members, instructors, coaches, competitors, officials, volunteers and employees are treated fairly and on an equal basis, irrespective of sex, age, disability, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, marriage and civil partnership, gender reassignment or social status.

Equality Act 2010

In this section we provide guidance on the Equality Act 2010 and how it relates to club members, associate members and guests and to Recognised Training Centres (RTCs).

The Equality Act 2010 harmonised all existing anti-discrimination legislation.  The Act applies to 'Associations' which include private members' clubs, 'Service Providers' which include RTCs, as well as employers.

The RYA's Equality Policy and information and guidance on each of the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010 can be found by clicking on the link below.

Inclusion

Count on RYA to support you in helping your members get the most out of your club.

Do you have members at your club that use glasses or hearing aids, or have had a stroke, or have mobility issues?  By making small changes, you can create big differences in the experience that people have at your club.  A great experience can lead to retention and offer opportunities for new members.

There are thousands of people with disabilities across the UK, many of whom have families that would relish to opportunity to sail together. Inclusivity can be the key.

Accessibility Guidelines

Sailing clubs and centres should offer a welcome to everyone and encourage all people to take part in the sport of sailing, training facilities, and the social life of the club.

Disabled people sometimes find that their welcome is restricted by barriers both in and outside the building and by the attitudes of some people.

The Sailability Programme, aims to support venues so they can ensure people can attend a club or centre, participate and get involved with any other activities at the centre, ensuring the sport is safe, open and fun.
